The International Coordinators at the Student Unions’ International Unit have arranged language cafés at Professorn at Lappis twice a month this semester.
At Language Café, students from all over the world have been chatting to each other in different languages, they have been practicing everything from Chinese and Arabic to English and of course Swedish.
– Everyone who has been to Language Café at Professorn really appreciates it. We have got good reviews from the students and it has been great to follow their Swedish language development, says Linnéa Lindgren, International Coordinator at the Student Union.
Language Café is important for international students who want to learn Swedish. And native Swedish speakers are often extra appreciated when they show up.
– It’s good to practice Swedish with real Swedes, and it’s fun to meet new people at the same time, says Simon Evans, from England.
– I have met new friends, learned the Russian alphabet and each time I have been here has been great, says Alexander Kessler, from Germany.
Each time there have been different themes for the students to talk about, if they have had difficulties in finding subjects. Christmas and traditions was the theme for the last Language Café this semester 8th of December.
Language Café as a concept started with an event arranged by the Student Union last autumn, Language Mixer Mingle, which was followed up this past spring with two Language Cafés. Both arranged by Lingonord, a club affiliated to the Humanities Faculty Club. And the concept
Language Café has recently evolved into a Student Union Association The Language Club.
– We hope that by making the concept an association, it will be possible for more students to get engaged and hopefully it can continue to grow even without support from the International Coordinators, says Linnea Lindgren.
Language Café will continue this spring starting in February 2012. Visit: sus.su.se/language-club for up-to-date information.
